These images can occupy tens of gigabytes\nwhen uncompressed, and so cannot be easily read using standard tools or\nlibraries, which are designed for images that can be comfortably\nuncompressed into RAM. Whole-slide images are typically multi-resolution;\nOpenSlide allows reading a small amount of image data at the resolution\nclosest to a desired zoom level.\n\nOpenSlide can read virtual slides in several formats:\n\n* Aperio_ (``.svs``, ``.tif``)\n* Hamamatsu_ (``.ndpi``, ``.vms``, ``.vmu``)\n* Leica_ (``.scn``)\n* MIRAX_ (``.mrxs``)\n* Philips_ (``.tiff``)\n* Sakura_ (``.svslide``)\n* Trestle_ (``.tif``)\n* Ventana_ (``.bif``, ``.tif``)\n* `Generic tiled TIFF`_ (``.tif``)\n\n.. _OpenSlide: https://openslide.org/\n.. _Aperio: https://openslide.org/formats/aperio/\n.. _Hamamatsu: https://openslide.org/formats/hamamatsu/\n.. _Leica: https://openslide.org/formats/leica/\n.. _MIRAX: https://openslide.org/formats/mirax/\n.. _Philips: https://openslide.org/formats/philips/\n.. _Sakura: https://openslide.org/formats/sakura/\n.. _Trestle: https://openslide.org/formats/trestle/\n.. _Ventana: https://openslide.org/formats/ventana/\n.. _`Generic tiled TIFF`: https://openslide.org/formats/generic-tiff/\n\n\nRequirements\n============\n\n* Python 2 >= 2.6 or Python 3 >= 3.3\n* OpenSlide >= 3.4.0\n* Python Imaging Library or Pillow\n\n\nInstallation\n============\n\n1. `Install OpenSlide`_.\n\n2. ``pip install openslide-python``\n\n.. _`Install OpenSlide`: https://openslide.org/download/\n\n\nUsing PIL\n---------\n\n``setup.py`` assumes that you want to use the Pillow fork of PIL.
